I am happy to have you here. I have an extensive background in the psychiatric field and I specialize in child and adolescent psychiatry treating individuals with eating disorders, bipolar disorder, ADD, anxiety and depression. My practice is restricted to children, adolescents and adults under the age of 25. By working in conjunction with your doctors, I develop a comprehensive treatment plan that may involve an intensive outpatient progam, avoiding hospitiliaztion and working to significantly improve quality of life!

Psychiatrists vs. Psychologists

I am often asked about the what makes a psychiatrist different from a psychologist. A psychiatrist is a physician who has completed medical school and specialized residency training in psychiatry. Because they are M.D.s, psychiatrists can prescribe medication.

  • "Dr. Copelan is not only an excellent clinician but also a premiere medical educator who is an expert in her field. She is one of the best examples of a caring, deeply knowledgeable, and dedicated physician that I have come accross. As a professor of medicine at USC Keck School of Medicine, she introduced me to characteristics of patient care that will continue to serve my career in the future. I would encourage any patient or physician to get to know Dr. Copelan, who I consider one of the best physicians I have met in my brief career."

Sidharth Anand, MD, MBA Independent Hospital & Health Care Professional
  • "Dr. Copelan taught me a great deal about being a provider in the mental health field. She works with her patients with such compassion and empathy. Her love for the profession and for her patients is inspiring. She is so approachable and available for her patients, so much so that it is easy to forget just how much of a scholar she is and how her clinical knowledge re: pharmacology, diagnoses, and psychotherapy exceeds that of most people in her field. Her use of therapy dogs not only seems to comfort the patients directly, but also allows her patients to see Dr. Copelan as caring and they ultimately seem to become less guarded around her. She is an expert in creating a healing relationship with patients directly and in group therapy. She is also an expert in addressing the family system and in the treatment of Eating Disorders. Watching her lecture students at USC Medical School, it was evident that the medical students were surprised by her humbleness and yet still learned so much in a subject (psychiatry) that is often foreign to first and second year medical students."

Beth Brudney Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Elizabeth Brudney, PMHNP
